The climate of Rome also helped the people of the city. The region had mild, rainy winters and hot, dry summers, which made it possible for the region to develop a strong agricultural base. Romans were able to grow many different kinds of crops like wheat, grapes, and olives. This abundance of food supported the people and allowed Rome to prosper. The climate made all year-long agriculture possible (growing crops in every season, not just summer). Romans had extra food and products to sell on the trade routes for money. Rome also had the advantage to be near water. The Tiber River provided a reliable source of fresh water to irrigate their farms and provide drinking water for humans and animals. |
